About

Our mission and what we do
What is period poverty?
Period Pals is an Austin, Texas based student led non-profit organization fighting to end period poverty and period stigma in the Austin community. Period pals does work with service, education, and advocacy. Through service, we provide menstruating individuals with free, organic, period products that they otherwise may not be able to afford. Period Pals uses education in order to help end period stigma. There is a lot of shame and stigma surrounding periods and through educating those around us about periods, we are able to help break the stigma and create a safe place to talk about periods. Lastly, in Period Pals we believe that period rights are human rights and that every menstruating individual deserves easy-access to menstrual products and with that goal in mind we aim to eliminate the tampon tax in Texas through advocacy.
Period Poverty refers to the global issue of inadequate access to sanitary period products that menstruating individuals face. Period Poverty is an issue that is often overlooked, in fact, over one-third of Americans don't view period poverty as an issue in the United States. Truth is, period poverty affects millions of people world wide. Period Poverty not only affects low income and homeless girls and women but transgender and nonbinary individuals as well. Menstrual products are considered a luxury in 35/50 of the United States as they impose a sales tax on menstrual products. This tax is called the tampon tax and only select  states across the country have banned it. 42% of women have had to use improper menstrual products during their period because they could not afford products in stores which can lead to infections, rashes, abnormal bleeding, and in severe cases Toxic Shock Syndrome which can be fatal.
